Three law enforcement officers were killed and two others were injured on Wednesday in a shooting in the Codorus Township, Pennsylvania, State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris said.

The shooter is also dead, Paris told reporters in a press conference.

The police were apparently serving a warrant when they were fired upon, three sources familiar with the matter told NBC News.

The two surviving officers were hospitalized in a critical condition, but are stable, Paris said.

“The grief will be unbearable but we will bear it,” Paris added, saying, “we will not rest until we conduct a full, fair and competent investigation into this matter.”

“We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country,” Governor Josh Shapiro said.

“This kind of violence is not OK, we need to do better as a society,” he continued.

Witness recounts hearing around 30 shots fired

A witness told NBC News that he was driving in the area and heard gunshots ringing, before seeing people on the ground.

He added that one of the people on the ground appeared to be a police officer, and that he heard around 30 shots fired.

“It was just continuous," he said. "Lots of shots, more than what I could count."

North Codorus is approximately 185km. west of Philadelphia.

This is a developing story.
