Going out for breakfast is one of those treats most people can allow themselves occasionally. It doesn’t break the bank, and it starts the day off on a pleasant high note.
We had heard, through a good friend, that Tenne in Ra’anana is a great place for breakfast (and lunch and dinner), and it also has a huge takeaway section. Tenne is located in Neve Zemer, a fairly new area of Ra’anana.
We sat on the large glass-walled balcony of the restaurant and enjoyed the pristine view below, which includes the Sportek arena. On the balcony was a magnificent display of healthy houseplants arranged around the breakfast area.
The two partners of the restaurant are Snir Ben Saadon and Amit Kaufman. They had worked together in the food industry for many years and established Tenne two and a half years ago.
If you think breakfast consists of just eggs on toast, think again. Tenne offers a large variety of original breakfast dishes, which will leave you spoiled for choice.
What's on the menu?
I chose something I love to eat out but never make at home – shakshuka. My companion virtuously chose a salad, of which there are several options. He selected the Caprese.
The first item in any breakfast has to be the coffee, and two cappuccinos arrived, exactly as ordered, hot and strong – a great start to our meal.
My shakshuka arrived quickly: two perfectly cooked eggs bathing in a spicy tomato sauce, with salad and tehina on the side. The marvelous bread we also received was studded with black sesame seeds. The side salad was standard and the tehina a tad thin – but otherwise this was a great opener for my meal.
In the Caprese salad my companion enjoyed, the fresh vegetables were enhanced with mozzarella and fried artichoke and dressed with very good balsamic vinaigrette (NIS 59).
The next item, which we shared, was called Salmon Brioche. This was like no other brioche one had ever seen – it was a perfect square. The salmon was top quality, and the coddled egg on top added just the right note. Capers, dill, and cream cheese added to the success of the dish (NIS 52).
Yet another dish arrived – stuffed vine leaves perched on a plate of labaneh with rocket salad. It was a dish with an exotic mix of flavors (NIS 39).
As a kind of dessert, we enjoyed a freshly baked buttery and not overly sweet croissant (NIS 18).
Co-owner Ben Saadon came over to say goodbye. He had just completed eight months of reserve duty in the army and was happy to be back at work. He told us that the Rosh Hashanah menu with every traditional food for the festival is available.
As we left, he thrust a huge bag of goodies from the takeaway buffet into our hands. No doubt you will be hearing more about this in the future.
