Passover 5786 may have unfolded under difficult circumstances in Jerusalem this year, but the spirit of the day, and the chance to enjoy meaningful time together, hasn’t disappeared.

While the war with Iran has quieted some of the usual holiday buzz, and access to areas like the Old City remains more limited due to Home Front Command guidelines and police checkpoints, that doesn’t mean romance is off the table.

In fact, the slightly calmer atmosphere has created a different kind of opportunity: more intimate, less crowded moments to explore the city side by side. From peaceful corners to lively pockets that are still very much open and welcoming, Jerusalem continues to offer plenty of ways to enjoy a special outing together.

Here are some great spots in and around Jerusalem for a memorable date, even in these unusual times.

Tower of David Museum

The first pick, for couples that love a mix of history, culture, and a little bit of magic, is the Tower of David Museum to explore the richness of Jerusalem’s past, the iconic citadel towering over the Jaffa Gate access into the Old City. The museum continues to host an exceptional Yehoram Gaon exhibition, where the public can feel with their senses and delve into aspects of life of the Israeli and Jerusalemite cultural icon.

Additionally, the rest of the museum, showcasing layers of Jerusalem’s past, is open to the public with 10 exhibits, with the public finishing at the iconic viewpoint where you and your date can enjoy a 360-degree panorama of both old and new Jerusalem.

The exhibit is located in a protective space, and within the open museum one is never too far away from access in case of a siren.

Neta Heller, deputy general manager of the museum, said, “It is always special to visit the Tower of David. We are the gateway to the city. You can see the exhibition, which is full of interactive gadgets combined with archaeological findings. All of this is inside the current citadel, which has layers of Jerusalem since the First Temple period. It is one of the most romantic places, as here you can truly sense Jerusalem and get a perspective on the special city.”

Time Elevator Jerusalem – Mamilla

Not far away, and perfect for a fun, slightly different kind of date, is a historical roller coaster experience, quite literally: the Time Elevator Jerusalem, located inside the enclosed Mamilla Mall. It’s an easy, playful option when you want to mix a bit of adventure into your time together.

Here, you can reserve your seat to go through a 30-minute time warp throughout the long ages of Jerusalem’s history. Get ready to fasten your seatbelt, as you will feel and most likely learn something new about Jerusalem’s rich and verified past along the way.

If there is an alert, the time elevator will stop, even if you are witnessing Jeremiah’s pleas or Roman soldiers. The participants will take the elevator to the minus 5 floor of the parking lot.

To add variety to the experience, much of the Mamilla mall complex remains open, with its restaurants and boutique stores across the promenade. You can sip coffee with a front view of the Tower of David, or cruise along the fashion mall, paying attention to the many statues, exhibits, stores, or the street musician that can attract crowds.

First Station

Looking for something a little more low-key, charming, and relaxed? The First Station Jerusalem is a great go-to for an easy, enjoyable date without the need for advance planning.

In the midst of a very public fight over its future, with the complex slotted to shut down in favor of an Israel Rail Station, the complex features a variety of neat restaurants, such as popular ones like Wok to Wok and Fiori. It can also work as a family outing with corners for children. There are several interesting arts and craft stores.

According to Ilan Levy, whose wife owns the Miril jewelry and clothes boutique at the First Station, “We have been here for 14 years. It is a great atmosphere. Lots of couples come. They first go to dine at one of the restaurants and enjoy themselves. Afterward, they wander around the respective stores. This particular store has handmade jewelry, Judaica, and clothes from Italy.”

Mahane Yehuda market

A timeless favorite for locals and an effortlessly fun date spot is the Mahane Yehuda market. Even on quieter days, the shuk has a special kind of charm that makes it feel more personal, giving you the chance to slow down and really take it all in together.

Without the usual intense crowds, you can meander through the stalls at your own pace, meet the colorful vendors, and get to know the unique characters that give the market its energy. It becomes less about rushing through and more about sharing the experience – tasting, chatting, and discovering little gems side by side.

Whether it’s trying a new blend of coffee or tea, sharing something sweet like kanafeh, or picking out spices and ingredients for a meal you’ll make together later, the market naturally turns into an interactive, memorable date.

As the day turns into evening and the atmosphere shifts, many of the shuk’s bars are still open, offering the perfect next stop for a casual drink to end the outing on a high note or even an old-fashioned pub crawl. en.machne.co.il/

People-led workshops: Soap/photography

As more people look beyond the usual dinner-and-drinks routine, experiential dates are gaining popularity. One of the more unexpected options is a soap-making workshop.

Rather than sitting across a table, couples share a creative process: selecting scents, exploring textures, and crafting something personal together. The experience naturally encourages conversation, laughter, and a sense of ease that traditional dates often lack.

What sets this workshop apart is its authenticity. Participants are guided through the creation of natural soap using quality ingredients, while enjoying the freedom to design something uniquely their own.

It’s a rare balance of creativity and craftsmanship, an experience that feels both engaging and meaningful without being complicated or overwhelming.

By the end, what remains is more than a handmade product. It’s a shared moment, a memory shaped by doing rather than just observing. For those seeking a date that feels genuine, creative, and memorable, this workshop offers a refreshing alternative, one that stays with you long after it ends.

Workshops are currently offered in small, intimate groups, with a focus on personal guidance and a carefully curated experience.

Interested in an activity where you create something together or learn a new skill? Various people are holding workshops for this very purpose in the Jerusalem area, ideally for small groups.

Cheryl and Ilan have such a workshop for couples, using all-natural ingredients. Located in Malha, they have a protected space.

Small groups (ideally no more than 5 or 6 people), NIS 200 per person. For more information: 052-839-2701

Another experiential date idea is photography workshops, which are available for couples and also for all age groups who want to learn the skill.

These custom photography workshops are in a safe outdoor space near a bomb shelter. The workshop is a safe activity involving a phone or camera to explore, so one can create and capture beautiful moments. Private workshops are between two and three hours.

At the end, one receives a collection of action shots from the session and a few beautifully edited portraits of the group.

Low-key dating ideas during wartime

For five weeks, the war has changed our routines, which includes our romantic life – from being awoken by sirens, to wartime restrictions, not to mention the many husbands in reserve duty and women taking care of children.

However, there are still ways couples can spend quality time together.

Not every date needs to be a big destination or a grand outing. Sometimes, the most meaningful moments come from bringing the experience home and simply making time to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company.

With the following ideas, you can bring the date to you, and help bring quality time back into the relationship.

At-home restaurant night

Turn an ordinary restaurant night to a themed restaurant night at home, an experience that lets you escape into another world of culture.

Start by choosing a few favorite cuisines together, write them down, and pick one from a jar. From there, divide the roles: One of you brings the dishes to life, while the other transforms the space with decorations, table settings, and even outfits to match.

Before you know it, you’re no longer sitting in your living room but are fully immersed in a completely different place and experience.

At-home foot spa night

Transform your home into a calming spa escape. Light candles, fill the air with a soothing scent like lavender or eucalyptus, and set up your sofa as a cozy spa space with fluffy towels, robes, soft music, and a few scattered flower petals.

Put your phones on silent and out of sight, then unwind together with face masks and a simple foot spa, warm water with salts, lemon slices, and flowers. Add a touch of indulgence with fresh fruit, perhaps dipped in chocolate, or a glass of wine.

Keep everything serene, intentional, and beautifully set so it truly feels like you’ve stepped into your own private spa.

Picnic near a shelter

Plan a sunset picnic at your favorite park, choosing a spot close to a nearby shelter for peace of mind. Pack a cozy picnic basket with cheese, fruit, and a bottle of wine, along with blankets and cushions to create a comfortable setting. Add a personal touch with soft fairy lights and a small speaker for gentle music.

Include something personal, like writing little notes to each other and tucking them into the basket, and bring along a simple board or card game to enjoy together. As the sun sets, you’ll have a beautiful, intimate moment. And if a siren sounds, you can continue the date together in the shelter.

Creative paint/DIY/scrapbook of the last year together or holiday

Create a handcrafted scrapbook filled with memories layered with photos, quotes, stickers, newspaper clippings, and different textures that tell your story together. Go through your camera roll or old posts and choose meaningful moments, then print your favorites at home or a nearby photo shop.

Visit a local craft store like Max Stock to pick up colored papers, scissors, and decorative touches. Take your time with it. This is more than a project; it’s something you’ll keep and cherish together.

At-home treasure hunt – traveling through your relationship

Turn your home into a meaningful treasure hunt built on the memories you’ve created together. Each clue leads to a place that holds a special moment – paired with a small object or keepsake from that time, and a romantic note to guide the way.

For example: “First stop – where we shared our first coffee date” (by the coffee station).

“Second stop – where we spent our coziest, laziest moments together” (by the TV).

“Third stop – where we got ready for something special” (by the mirror).

“Fourth stop – where we planned our favorite food adventures” (by the fridge).

Let each clue feel personal and nostalgic, leading you through your shared story, until the final hint reveals something new: where your next date will be.

Make up your own date experience

If you want to take the road less traveled, the act of planning a date experience with your partner could be a date idea itself. You can sit down over a drink or a cup of coffee and plot out ideas. It can be to plot out future hopes and dreams, or to create a structured calendar of ideas that both of you will then look forward to.

AS OF this writing, no one knows when the war will end; however, that does not mean one cannot spend quality time and experiences with one’s partner, either outdoors or at home.

Quality time can be created in any situation, and even as we find ourselves in challenging times, you can still spend meaningful moments with your significant other.
