A man drove a vehicle full of incendiary devices, including propane tanks and improvised explosives, into an athletics club in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday.

Portland authorities were called to Multnomah Athletic Club shortly before 3 a.m. after employees reported that a car had been driven into the building before catching fire. The driver was found dead in the car after Portland Fire and Rescue got the fire under control.

The explosives had not all fully detonated, the Portland Police Bureau stated after the event, and the explosive disposal squad needed to be called onto the scene in order to continue the investigation.

NBC News reported that the leader of the explosive disposal squad, Officer Jim DeFrain, said that the event was "by far the most complex scene" that he'd had to deal with in over 13 years as a bomb technician.

Explosive attack not terrorism, police chief says

Portland Police Chief Bob Day stated that the incident was "isolated," as opposed to an act of domestic terrorism. He added that the identity of the driver could not yet be determined, in part due to the risks involved in the investigation while the explosive devices were not yet fully cleared away.

CNN cited Adam Linnman, a spokesperson for the club, who said that the incident had occurred at a time when the club was closed, and that no club members or staff had been injured.
