The Health Ministry on Tuesday expanded its national preparedness plan, including the acquisition of approximately 485,000 additional vaccine doses, in response to a sharp rise in influenza cases nationwide.

The additional flu vaccine doses arrived at Ben Gurion Airport in recent days, and distribution to health maintenance organizations began Tuesday morning.

The ministry warned that flu morbidity is rising and urged the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible. While the vaccine does not entirely prevent infection, it significantly reduces the risk of serious illness and related complications.

“The flu vaccine is available free of charge at all health maintenance organizations,” the ministry said in a statement.

To protect at-risk populations, the ministry has launched a dedicated campaign in nursing homes and geriatric institutions. Protective kits containing flu vaccines, masks, antiviral medication Tamiflu, and influenza diagnostic tests have been sent to 255 facilities.

Reducing severe illness

“The goal of this step is to reduce severe illness and prevent widespread outbreaks among vulnerable populations,” the ministry said.

In line with the precautionary principle, the ministry reiterated its recommendation that at-risk individuals consider wearing masks in enclosed spaces and at public gatherings. Mask wearing is also recommended for medical personnel and visitors in nursing and geriatric homes to help safeguard residents and staff.

Earlier this month, two children, both about six years old, died of complications related to the flu.

“In Israel and in other countries, this year’s flu season began early, and it is evident that the rate of influenza morbidity is rising sharply. Based on global monitoring data, a season with severe illness is expected,” the ministry said.
