A forecast for significant snowfall on Mount Hermon this coming weekend, together with a nationwide cold snap, has revived Israelis’ “white dream” without a passport.

Many travelers are now looking for short winter breaks in the North that combine an alpine atmosphere, snowy views, and a relatively easy drive from the center of the country.

According to travel industry figures, demand for weekend stays in the Upper Galilee and Golan Heights is rising, with the Hermon ski site expected to open on Thursday.

Northern alternative for 'Israeli-sized' snow

For those who prefer snow in “Israeli doses,” the North offers an accessible alternative. The area provides proximity to Mount Hermon, dramatic winter landscapes, and a wide range of lodging options, from guesthouses and holiday villages to boutique hotels and luxury suites.

Short breaks lead demand, travel firm says

“Travelers are clearly searching for weekend getaways that let them enjoy snow on Hermon and a winter atmosphere, without committing to a long vacation,” said Tamar Garzon, CEO of Gulliver. “Proximity to nature sites and other northern attractions plays a central role here.”

Prices are relatively broad, allowing flexibility by travel style. Couples can find stays in holiday villages and simpler hotels starting at about NIS 1,300–1,400 per couple, including breakfast, while boutique hotels, luxury suites, or half-board packages often cost NIS 3,000 and above per couple for a weekend.

Beyond snow: The full winter experience

Many visitors come for the overall winter experience. Green hills, Galilee morning fog, a lit fireplace, local wine, and short walks between showers offer a close-to-home taste of abroad without leaving the country.
