United States special envoy Steve Witkoff and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are set to travel to Russia this week, the Wall Street Journal reported early on Sunday, following a meeting with Ukrainian officials in Miami.

A senior US official told the WSJ that Witkoff and Kushner will continue talks related to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war after flying there on Monday.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Sunday, Trump announced that Witkoff will likely meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week.

Saturday’s US-Ukraine meeting reportedly covered potential land swaps set forward as a part of a Trump administration-proposed peace plan and a timeline for holding upcoming elections in Ukraine.

According to the report, issues regarding Western security guarantees for Ukraine and Russian demands for recognition of seized territories remain unresolved.

A 'productive and successful' meeting

Following the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that “there’s more work to be done” before a peace plan can be enacted. This is delicate, it’s complicated, there are a lot of moving parts, and obviously, there’s another party involved here that’ll have to be a part of the equation.‘’

Rubio also stated that the goal of the discussions is not solely to end the war but also to “help Ukraine be safe forever so never again will they face another invasion.”

Rustem Umerov, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, stated that “a prosperous, strong Ukraine” is his delegation's goal, and that the meeting was “productive and successful.”
