European Union commissioners will impose new sanctions against Israel over its war in Gaza on Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for the commission.

Spokesperson Paula Pinho told reporters on Tuesday that "Tomorrow, commissioners will be adopting a package of measures on Israel, specifically, a proposal to suspend certain trade provisions."

On September 10, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced her intention to propose new sanctions targeting trade agreements between Israel and the EU.

The EU is Israel's largest trading partner, and such sanctions could have a sizeable impact on the Israeli economy.

The EU has repeatedly discussed launching sanctions against Israel

Multiple EU officials have stood behind the decision to target Israel. One European official told The Jerusalem Post, that part of the decision was due to their belief that Israel is "destroying the vision of a two-state solution - a solution that enjoys broad consensus across Europe.”

German officials have previously worked to block the EU from imposing sanctions.

The statements from the EU Commission come after a September 12 resolution passed in the United Nations General Assembly that paved the way for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Many EU member nations endorsed the resolution.
