US Vice President JD Vance said on Wednesday that European countries will have to take the "lion's share" of the burden of Ukraine's security guarantees.

"I don't think we should carry the burden here. I think that we should be helpful if it's necessary to stop the war and to stop the killing. But I think that we should expect, and the president certainly expects, Europe to play the leading role here," Vance told Fox News.

Vance added that the US was "open to having a conversation" but that the Trump administration was unwilling to make commitments "until we figure out what's gonna be necessary to stop the war in the first place."

"No matter what form this takes, the Europeans are going to have to take the lion's share of the burden. It's their continent, it's their security. And the president's been very clear, they're gonna have to step up here."

Vance also added that Russia wants some Ukrainian territory, "most of which they have occupied but some of which they haven't."

Kremlin will not set meeting date for trilateral meeting

This came after the Kremlin delayed setting a meeting date between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Putin was uninterested in meeting Zelensky "for the sake of media coverage or evening broadcasts."

"Any contacts involving national leaders must be prepared with the utmost thoroughness," he added.

However, Trump told Fox News that he had set up a pathway for Moscow and Kyiv to meet.

“I sort of set it up with Putin and Zelensky, and you know, they’re the ones that have to call the shots. We’re 7,000 miles away," he said.
