MAGA commentator Candace Owens dealt a big blow to President Donald Trump.
During an appearance on “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” Owens on Tuesday said she felt “embarrassed” that she campaigned for the president during the 2024 election cycle, after rallying against his decision to authorize US strikes against Iran’s nuclear sites over the weekend.
While she said she didn’t “regret” voting for him against former Vice President Kamala Harris, she said he has been a “chronic disappointment.”
“And I feel embarrassed that I told people to go vote for him because this wasn’t going to happen, and it is happening. I just think that the picture of politics in America is going to look very differently because of his actions,” Owens said.
“I don’t know where to go from here, I really don’t. But this is not the candidate that I voted for,” she added.
Owens, who has been a staunch supporter of Trump, has recently appeared to split from the president over US involvement in the Middle East. During the episode, she said that Trump gave MAGA a “promise” that the United States would not enter a war.
While host Piers Morgan pushed back, saying that Trump never declared an official war, Owens said it is “ridiculous” that the president would need to make a formal announcement, noting that he “dropped bombs” on Iran.
'We are a part of this war, whether we like it or not'
“So yes, we are a part of this war, whether we like it or not,” Owens said.
Owens emphasized that there was no “imminent threat” to the United States when Trump decided to “do what Bibi wanted,” referring to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“This was not Trump’s decision. This was Bibi Netanyahu’s decision. And that is the reason he did it,” Owens said, alleging that Israel dictates US foreign policy.
Owens has been accused of making antisemitic comments in the past, and has a history of promoting controversial tropes about Israel and Jewish people.
Owens also said the “very fractured” MAGA movement has never changed its stance on remaining anti-war — and said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has floated Trump’s impeachment over “illegally bombing Iran and dragging us into war,” should have “thrown on a red hat” in 2015 and 2020 and joined the movement, calling it “fantastic.” She said she would rather have her children “go to jail” before fighting on behalf of Israel.
“When you sign up for the military, you think you are doing that is going to better your country, and like I said, our country has been in steep decline,” Owens said.
Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran late Monday, with Iran starting the agreement, and then being joined by Israel 12 hours later. On Tuesday, he appeared outraged at the two countries, claiming to reporters that they both violated the truce.
“We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f—k they’re doing. Do you understand that?” Trump said.
