Keeping territorial integrity against the will of the people is a bad idea

Why are the US and the EU so insistent on keeping the territorial integrity of countries like Ukraine, Iraq and even the Palestinian proposed state (based on the 1948-1967 borders), when actual conditions on the ground would be better served otherwise?
