Heavy rains and snowfall have caused flash floods in several areas of Afghanistan, killing at least 17 people and injuring 11, according to the Associated Press.

Five members of a single family died when the roof of their home collapsed in Kabkan, a district in Herat province. “Two of the victims were children,” said Mohammad Yousaf Saeedi, spokesman for the Herat governor, AP reported.

Most casualties have occurred since Monday in districts affected by flooding. The National Disaster Management Authority said the severe weather has disrupted daily life across central, northern, southern, and western regions.

The floods have also damaged infrastructure, killed livestock, and affected roughly 1,800 families, the agency said. “Assessment teams have been sent to the worst-affected areas, with surveys ongoing to determine further needs,” Mohammad Yousaf Hammad, a spokesman for the authority, told AP.

This is a developing story.
