A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck some 20 miles off Taiwan's northeastern coastal city of Yilan late on Saturday, the island's weather administration said.
The quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei, and had a depth of 45 miles, it added. The Taipei city government reported no immediate incidents of major damage.
Taiwan Power Company reported that more than 3,000 homes in Yilan briefly lost power.
Damage assessment was underway, and no tsunami warning was issued following the quake, the National Fire Agency said.
