The cruise industry is entering a new year with a noticeable shift in travel habits: Fewer long and standard vacations, and more demand for focused, flexible, and personalized experiences. MSC Cruises has identified six key trends that will shape cruise vacations in 2026.

1. Vacation with a Game: Cruises for Sports Fans

The year 2026 is expected to be packed with international sports events, and many fans are planning their vacations around the next game or race. When events take place near major ports – such as Miami, Seattle, or Barcelona – it’s easy to combine sports viewing with a sea getaway.
MSC Cruises will serve as the main sponsor for Formula 1 races in Barcelona, Austin, and São Paulo, allowing racing enthusiasts to combine the Grand Prix experience with a cruise.

2. Short, Focused, and No Need to Take a Week Off

Short cruises of three to four nights are gaining popularity as the perfect solution for those seeking a quick break from daily life. Short cruises are available from Miami and Port Canaveral to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, including a stop at the private island Ocean Cay. The trend is also noticeable in Europe, with short cruises from Genoa or Southampton to Northern Europe.

3. Kids Influence Decisions – A Lot

Vacation decisions are no longer made only by parents: Over 80% report that children directly influence the choice of destination. Accordingly, cruise lines are investing in extensive family programs, with dedicated clubs for ages 0–17, over 100 hours of weekly activities, shared games, theater shows, and content that allows both children and parents to enjoy the vacation.

4. Seeking Peace, Nature, and Fresh Air

More than 40% of travelers report that they are looking for a relaxing vacation that connects them to nature, while about a quarter prefer quiet, low-noise activities. Against this backdrop, MSC Cruises will launch Alaska cruises in 2026: Seven nights from Seattle, including a stop in Victoria, Canada. The itinerary offers dramatic fjord and glacier views, whale watching, and wild nature – far from the bustle of tourist hotspots.

5. The Advantage of Off-Season Sailing

More and more travelers are choosing to skip peak seasons in favor of vacations during shoulder seasons or off-season periods: Prices are lower, sites are less crowded, and the weather is usually more pleasant.

6. Luxury with Full Personalization

On the other end of the spectrum are luxury seekers, looking for a worry-free vacation where everything is taken care of in advance. For them, the company offers the MSC Yacht Club – a “ship within a ship” concept. Guests enjoy a separate premium area, fast embarkation and disembarkation, 24/7 butler and concierge service, room service at any time, a premium drinks package, unlimited internet, and access to the thermal spa – along with full personalization of every detail of the vacation.
