Portuguese study: pacifier shape affects babies’ oral development.
A study conducted at the University of Minho in Portugal examined the effect of different nipple shapes of pacifiers on tooth positioning and jaw development in infants. Using a computerized model simulating the palate of a six-month-old baby and sucking cycles, researchers found that flat orthodontic pacifiers with a narrow neck and asymmetrical shape reduce the risk of crooked teeth and jaw deformities.
According to the study, the pressure distribution on the palate with these pacifiers is more even, allowing the tongue to perform natural sucking movements and supporting proper oral development. The involved experts agree that shape, material, usage limitations, and weaning time are key factors in oral health.
The findings suggest that using the right pacifier helps soothe the baby and reduces risks of misaligned teeth.
