Perplexity launches the Comet AI browser for free for all users around the world.
The American artificial intelligence company Perplexity AI announced that its new AI-based web browser, Comet, will now be available for free to all users worldwide. With this move, the company positions itself as a serious challenger to established browsers such as Google Chrome, declaring that “the internet is simply better on Comet” — while pledging that the browser will remain free forever.
Comet was created to place AI at the heart of the browsing experience. According to the company, it is a browser that not only “includes” a smart assistant but one where AI actually “travels with you across the web.” The browser can search for information, summarize content, organize tabs, write emails, compare prices, plan trips, track investments, and even provide sports updates.
The first version of Comet was launched last July — but was available only to subscribers of the prestigious Max plan, which cost NIS 200 per month. Later, the service was opened to users of the Pro plan (at a cost of NIS 20) and to invited users only. Now, anyone can download the browser without a subscription. The company stated that the waiting list for the service already includes “millions of people.”
The move to make Comet free comes amid growing competition in the field of AI browsers. Google integrated the Gemini model into its Chrome browser, Anthropic announced a browser AI agent in August, and OpenAI plans to launch its own smart browser soon. The Browser Company, developer of the Arc browser, also recently unveiled its new AI browser, Dia.
At Perplexity, they understand that this competition requires real-world proof. The company emphasizes that Comet’s main advantage lies in its “agentic” capabilities — that is, an intelligent assistant that operates autonomously and completes tasks in real time. The main assistant, Comet Sidecar, accompanies the user throughout browsing, answers questions about pages, summarizes content, navigates, and performs various actions on the user’s behalf.
Alongside the free basic version, Perplexity also offers advanced paid services. Max subscribers enjoy access to powerful AI models and tools such as a smart email assistant that drafts replies, schedules meetings, and organizes the inbox. They also receive early access to new features — including the Background Assistant, which was announced at the company’s event.
