Samsung announced at a launch event in New York its new generation of foldable-screen smartphones: The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. Pre-orders for the smartphones has started with buyers receiving double the storage capacity as a gift. The Fold 7 price with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage is NIS 7,450, the 12 GB/512 GB version costs NIS 7,900, and the 16 GB/1 TB version is priced at NIS 9,000.
Both Flip 7 models come with 12 GB RAM, with the 256 GB version selling for NIS 4,100 and the 512 GB version for NIS 4,550.
Samsung Z Fold 7 – Thinner and Lighter
The main issue with the Fold devices was their thickness — they were simply too bulky. Samsung’s engineers succeeded in significantly reducing the thickness of the Fold 7, which now measures 8.9 mm when closed, compared to 12.1 mm in the previous generation. For comparison, the thickness of the S25 Ultra today is 8.2 mm, so here we get a foldable smartphone almost as thin as a regular device.
The weight of the Fold 7 is 215 grams, much lighter than the Fold 6 which weighed a hefty 239 grams. Even the S25 Ultra weighs more – 218 grams.
Z Fold 7 – More Durable with Titanium Plate Integration
What concerns users about thinner smartphones is their durability. Samsung addressed this, noting that the external glass on the back and front screen are made from durable materials, including the water resistance standard IP48. The external screen is Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, the back is Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and the frame is Gorilla Glass Victus. The main screen was redesigned with a thinner and lighter structure but also stronger. This reinforcement was achieved by integrating a layer of titanium plates. In short, this smartphone is expected to handle drops and scratches well.
The smartphone’s hinge was also upgraded with durable materials — Samsung calls it the Armor FlexHinge, which is water-resistant. When opening the Fold 7, you’ll find a larger screen than the previous generation: 8 inches instead of 7.6 inches, almost like a mini tablet. The screen uses Dynamic AMOLED 2x technology, offering excellent quality and a high brightness of 2600 nits.
The external screen, on which users focus most of their usage throughout the day when they don’t want to physically open the smartphone, was also upgraded. The screen is now larger – 6.5 inches compared to 6.3 inches. It also features AMOLED technology with the same high brightness as the internal screen.
Samsung adapted its interface and various capabilities for the larger screen. For example, when editing photos and removing objects with AI, you can see the before and after images side by side. Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, has also been adapted for the larger screen and can understand what is happening and display content appropriately. Samsung offers 6 months free of charge for Gemini – Google AI Pro to device purchasers.
Samsung promises 7 years of operating system updates and another 7 years of security updates. The operating system here is Android 16 with the One UI 8 interface.
Z Fold 7 – Processor Optimized for Samsung Devices with AI Adaptation
The processor here is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, in a version customized for Samsung devices. This is the same processor used in the company’s flagship device – the S25 Ultra. The processor delivers a 41% improvement over the previous generation in AI (NPU) performance. Probably due to the device’s design slimming, the battery capacity remains the same at 4400 mAh, and wired charging is not fast — only 25 watts.
Camera Upgrade with 200 Megapixel Sensor
Another significant upgrade in the Fold 7 is in the camera system. It features three improved sensors: A 200 MP main sensor with 2x optical zoom (instead of 3x optical zoom in the previous generation), a 10 MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom, and a 12 MP ultra-wide sensor. The external selfie camera is 10 MP with a wider 100-degree field of view compared to 85 degrees. The internal camera is also 10 MP. Samsung says the camera now processes images faster with more sharpness and richer colors in photos and videos.
Night video shooting was also improved, with the camera better detecting movement and thus separating moving objects from the static background, reducing noise thanks to the ProVisual Engine technology.
Galaxy Z Flip 7 – Larger External Screen
If the Fold 7 targets heavy users looking for a smartphone with tablet capabilities, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 targets a larger mass of consumers seeking a clamshell, very compact device that opens into a smartphone with a regular-sized screen.
The Flip 7’s internal screen grew to 6.9 inches compared to 6.7 inches in the previous generation and comes with the successful Dynamic AMOLED 2X display technology. The external screen, now 4.1 inches instead of 4 inches, features reduced bezels and the display stretched almost across the entire cover. This is a high-quality display with 2600 nits brightness for comfortable viewing in direct sunlight and a high 120 Hz refresh rate. Samsung expects users to be able to do almost everything they need on the external display without physically opening the device; thus, it also adapted Gemini’s usage for this mode.
Regarding durability, it has the same water-resistant hinge as the Fold 7, and the device itself is water-resistant to IP48 standards. The external screen and back are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The device’s weight slightly increased from 187 to 188 grams. The processor is Samsung’s Exynos 2500, and battery capacity increased from 4000 mAh to 4300 mAh, promising improved usage time.
The camera remains the same, featuring a dual-camera setup: A 50 MP main sensor with 2x optical zoom and a 12 MP ultra-wide sensor. The selfie camera is 10 MP. ProVisual Engine technology is also present here.
