Sam Grundwerg, World Chairman of Keren Hayesod, speaking at the Jerusalem Post Diplomatic Conference held at the Friends of Zion Media Center in Jerusalem, discussed the emergence of what he termed the “October 8 Jew” phenomenon, referring to Diaspora Jews from all walks of life, who were less connected with their Jewish identity and with Israel, in the aftermath of the atrocities of October 7, established or rediscovered a greater sense of Jewish connection.

Grundwerg expressed the hope that this increased sense of identification with Israel and the Jewish community is also taking place within the Christian community and noted the powerful response to the tragic events of October 7.

“Since that devastating day,” said Grundwerg, “Keren Hayesod, together with many dedicated partners and other organizations, has mobilized to address Israel’s immediate, mid- and long-term needs, and the results have been nothing short of uplifting. By the end of this year, Keren Hayesod will have raised more than NIS 2 billion for Israel since 2023. representing an increase of over 20% compared to our annual fundraising average in prior years. This is an unprecedented surge that reflects the deep concern, love, and unwavering commitment of our supporters worldwide.”

Responding to the comments of Frédéric Journès, Ambassador of France to Israel, who had preceded him on stage and expressed support for the recognition of a Palestinian state, Grundwerg said, “I respectfully disagree. While it’s true that Hamas is not a supporter of a two-state solution, giving unilateral recognition will absolutely give them a reward and will turn October 7 into their American version of July 4.”

Grundwerg expressed the hope that the post-October 7 identification with Israel and the Jewish people will continue, and said, “If the phenomenon of the so-called October 8 Jew becomes just a temporary wave or a passing trend, a short-lived moment of engagement, unity, and solidarity, then we will have missed a historic opportunity. We have the chance to regroup, rebuild, and reconnect – to permanently strengthen not only Israel, but the bond between Israel and the Jewish people and our supporters worldwide.”
